. SCHOOL WINERY

4 LEARNING BY DOING
Don Bosco Winery Mendoza, Argentina. ANA ETKIN

The aim of the project is to extend the existent building of the winery and to incorporate new storage technology with stainless steel tanks.
The new winery is joined to the existent building by a ramp that serves as a continuous link between the buildings and shows the sequence of the evolution of the winery and its different production methods with the passing of time. The new building has two opposing faces: the exterior one that pays homage to the wine grape harvest through the use of textured concrete and the interior face that is smooth and is related to the winemaking process using new technology. The exterior face of the building has a foundation of reinforced concrete built with a wood plank; the patterns on it symbolise vine stems. The vine canopy is epresented by the irregular building cover, which is made of metal and wood slabs through which the light percolates.

The different parts that make up this building are assembled by a structure that is a solid volume made of concrete, which anchors the whole building to the ground. The visible structure is made up of metal columns that, due to balance and function reasons, support the building. There is a glass plane that is light and transparent, which defines the access to the pavilion and limits the immediate spaces. The enormous open spaces –the so called basement,
the third level in the open air, and the
intermediate level covered by a crystal skin– provide the spaces with light and shadow creating a peaceful and simple atmosphere that is the special characteristic of this building which is used as the cultural centre of the institution.

36 BOXES TO PLAY IN
Jacarandá Nursery School, Buenos Aires.
JOSELEVICH - RASCOVSKY STUDIO

We have worked with the idea of creating a nursery school that expresses itself as such and where the space, light, and scale are the
protagonists. It is a place which classrooms and rooms in general are spacious so that the different activities can be comfortably
developed. It has been constructed with high standard safety and quality measures. The nursery school has a joyful and playful atmosphere but a strong institutional image.
The aim was to give the place a decoration that is simple and austere but strong at the same time.
This was achieved through the characteristics of the construction, the spaciousness, and the use of natural light, all of which are the result of the appropriate use of the material and formal resources. The interpretation of the program made us realise that the most important aspects were the scale and the relation between the classrooms and the patio.

The nursery school is the first public building that children make use of. It is the first contact with a building which scale and complexity are very different to those of their homes. It is their first encounter with public spaces, and it is therefore a new architectural and emotional experience. It is an intermediate instance between their home and the exterior, where they are not protected by adults. The emotional reactions produced by this new space are as strong as the physical reactions provoked by, for example, the heat, the light, the sounds, or the air. That is why the idea was to create a microcosm with an area defined by a visualtactile radius of a metre with materials, doors, windows, and objects created to stimulate the little ones. The surface of the rooms depends on the amount of children, their age, and the type of activity to be carried out in the place. The younger children need more surface and the groups are smaller. The balance is achieved due to the fact that older children need less space and there are more of them per group.

48 OPEN EDUCATION
School Nº 23 and nursery school Nº 5 D.E. 19
The school building is situated at south of the plot of land. The building has a long ground floor and two levels that open towards the north so as to take profit of the light through a semi-covered gallery. The school has 14 classrooms, a science
and technology laboratory, a room that serves as the computer lab and library, a music room, management areas, a gym /multiple use room, a kitchen and a cafeteria; these last three rooms

can be accessed through the square so that the whole community can make use of them. The nursery school is developed in only one level and it has a rectangular surface that is broken through by three interior patios that open towards the northwest. The glass walls allow light to flow freely through the building, which aids visual integration and enriches the interior spaces. There is a patio for each string of classrooms that are organized according to the different ages. The patios are low scale recreation areas which are open to bigger ones so that, depending on the activity, one or all of them are used.

58 THREE PUBLIC SCHOOLS
Ataliba Leonel kindergarten and school. SPBR ARCHITECTS

The great height of the area where the school is situated offers –as is the case in this type of topographies– a panoramic view of the neighbourhood, in particular of the area that is opposite the valley which most outstanding feature is the great vegetation typical of high locations. The school was built longitudinally along an axis parallel to the street, from one corner to the other occupying the whole extension of the front of the block.

Taking into account the young age of the students –the school is for basic education for the 1st to the 4th year– as well as the small size of the plot of land and the amount of covered surface that is recommended by the FDE, the project defined the gym as the centre of the whole program that is made up of different spaces, therefore building an spacious and joyful school. Open in the ground floor and closed by moulded

elements, this central space is airy and does no enclose the students or the sounds.

As the plot of land is exiguous and has two corners, the design of the building is compact and vertical. The covered sports area was located in the upper part of the building so that the entrance area would be free for the covered and open air patios and gardens. The space is, at the same time, open to the city and covered by the school, which creates a relationship between the public areas and the neighbourhood.

The low budget made it necessary to create a building that could be built in different stages, but as it should not look like a series of fragments, we had to create a special project strategy. Therefore, the bigger structures wereused to link the new spaces with the existent ones, and the details were minimized concentrating them in strategic places so as to create spatial and aesthetic effects.

Art School in Ñuñoa.

The original architecture of the campus is a complex used for primary education that used to be a religious school run by French nuns. There are a series of patios that have a church with a romantic style in their interior. The east campus is made up of two-storey buildings organized around nine patios with a church that occupies the central space.

Auditorium and Casino: authorisation to use the existent steel structure. A glass skin and a roof over which it is possible to walk cover the existent pillars to create the principal volume in the interior, another smaller volume covered with wood where the auditorium is located, and a third volume that is the stage.Patio with English style: an excavation to have more space and to create semi-buried rooms in the west perimeter of the existent building. Adolfo Couvé Room: Remodelling of the small existent auditorium.

Law Faculty of the University Diego Portales.
RENZO ALVANO, PABLO RIQUELME, MAURICIO LENIZ

The initial complexity of the new project for the Law Faculty is the need to modify a two-storey existent building that has a neoclassic style. The strategy is to preserve the existent structure doing away with its decoration and to reinforce it with a foundation for the new structure.
